Project in Progress: St. Thomas More Catholic Church

Resurrection of Jesus

Saint Thomas More Church | Sarasota, Florida

This monumental glass mosaic depicts the Resurrection of Jesus, the central mystery of the Christian faith. Christ rises triumphantly from the tomb holding the banner of victory, while radiant golden light emanates from behind Him, symbolizing divine glory, renewal, and the triumph of life over death.

Two kneeling angels bow in reverence on either side of the empty tomb, their gestures expressing awe before the miracle of the Resurrection. Their vibrant garments and wings introduce rich blues, reds, and golds that balance the composition while emphasizing the sacred moment.

Behind the figure of Christ, a burst of golden rays spreads outward across the mosaic, drawing the viewer’s eye to the center and creating a powerful sense of spiritual illumination. The surrounding landscape, composed of stone, trees, and natural elements, anchors the scene in the earthly world while allowing the divine presence to dominate the composition.

The artwork is composed of thousands of individually cut glass tesserae carefully arranged to create depth, movement, and luminous color transitions. The lower portion of the mosaic features darker earth toned stones around the tomb, gradually transitioning into brighter golds and light tones above, visually guiding the viewer from the darkness of the grave to the radiance of resurrection.

Designed and fabricated by Apperlo Art in Bonita Springs, Florida, the mosaic is created using traditional mosaic techniques combined with contemporary craftsmanship.

This page presents the work in progress. The process of fabrication and installation will be documented and updated weekly as the project develops.
