A New Mosaic for Lakeland Regional Health

We recently finished a glass mosaic for the Med/Surg waiting area at Lakeland Regional Health, commissioned through Art Expressions.

The piece is a triptych, 3 panels that connect into one continuous scene, each panel 48 inches by 48 inches, for 48 square feet total. The brief was simple on paper and a little more involved in practice, a Florida landscape that reflects Lakeland, with a local landmark and the native plants and birds that belong there. On one end, a citrus tree by the water. The scene then opens onto a lake with a wooden dock running out toward the horizon under a big Florida sky. On the other end, a great egret in flight over a heron standing in the shallows, with palms and marsh grass along the bank.

All of it was cut and set by Mila Apperlo's hand in our Bonita Springs studio.

Waiting rooms are not galleries. People in them are usually waiting on news, not browsing art. So the goal here was something calm and a little familiar, a piece that gives the eye somewhere to land without asking much of the viewer.
