This artful addition to the hospital's design is more than just decoration; it plays a crucial role in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that contributes to the healing process.

Sandra Raak and Mila Apperlo

Sandra Raak, the senior design coordinator with Lee Health, shared her vision of integrating art into the hospital's design from the very beginning of the project. Her goal was to establish an optimal healing environment where art was not an afterthought but an integral part of the interior design and overall ambiance. The design palette itself is deliberately neutral and calming, but it's the artwork that introduces vibrant pops of color and life.

"We want it to be invigorating and full of life, too, because this is a place for wellness and a healthy life," explained Raak. It's this thoughtful approach that sets Lee Memorial Hospital apart and makes it a haven for both patients and their families.

The creative minds behind this incredible project included the Lee Health design team led by Sandra Raak and the mosaic artist Mila Apperlo. Together, they faced the challenge of crafting an inviting environment inspired by nature, hope, and healing. Their vision was to incorporate imagery that reflected the unique beauty of Southwest Florida's landscape.

Mila Apperlo, a Bonita Springs artist renowned for her stunning creations, was commissioned to contribute her artistic talents to the project. Apperlo's contribution to Lee Memorial Hospital consists of nine magnificent glass mosaic pieces that grace the facility's walls. Each mosaic embodies a tropical theme, featuring elements such as turtles, starfish, dolphins, mangrove and palm trees, serene beaches, the tranquil Gulf of Mexico, and Florida's native birds.

The awe-inspiring mosaics were meticulously crafted over a nine-month period, with more than 25,000 individual pieces of hand-cut colored glass coming together to form these stunning works of art. The attention to detail and the dedication shine through in every piece.

As you wander through the halls of Lee Memorial Hospital, you'll find yourself not just in a healthcare facility but in a sanctuary of art and healing. The vibrant mosaics serve as a testament to the hospital's commitment to holistic wellness, combining the expertise of healthcare professionals with the power of artistic expression.

Incorporating art into the the hospital interior is a testament to the belief that healing encompasses more than just physical recovery. It's about nurturing the spirit and offering solace to those in need. Lee Memorial Hospital has achieved this beautifully by transforming its spaces into a gallery of hope, where art becomes an essential partner in the journey to recovery.

For patients and their families, the art at Lee Memorial Hospital offers more than just visual appeal; it provides a source of inspiration, comfort, and positivity during challenging times. It's a reminder that healing is a multifaceted process that involves not only medical treatment but also the soothing power of art.

In conclusion, the mosaics at Lee Memorial Hospital are a shining example of how thoughtful design can enhance the healing experience.

Sandra Raak, Mila Apperlo, and the entire design team have succeeded in creating an environment where nature's beauty and the human spirit unite to promote wellness and hope. This remarkable art collection is a testament to the idea that art and healthcare can come together to create something truly extraordinary.
