On the Adriatic coast the light is strong and the sea is never far away. For a private home in Bar, we brought that blue inside, through the front door.

The commission

In 2008 Radule Medenica commissioned Stanisic Studio to make the stained glass for the entrance of his home in Bar, the port town on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro. The set fills a wide entrance: a double door with 3 panels in each leaf, a sidelight of 3 narrow panels on each side, and a long transom above, about 2.2 square meters of glass in all, or about 24 square feet.

The design

The design is modern and abstract. A wide band of cobalt blue sweeps in a great circle through the transom and down into the 2 doors, where it breaks into curved pieces like waves on a shore. Between them run rows of round blue glass jewels, set like beads on a grid of lead lines, with a few red jewels scattered among them as bright accents. The narrow sidelights answer in a calmer voice, with simple stripes of red and blue beside clear glass.

The transom

The background is clear textured glass, so the trees outside stay visible as soft shapes and moving light, while the blue glows strongest when the sun stands behind the door.

Lamberts glass

For the color the studio chose Lamberts glass, mouth blown sheet glass from the Glashütte Lamberts in Waldsassen, Germany, where flat glass is still blown by mouth, sheet by sheet. Every sheet is a little different in thickness and tone, so the blue is never flat: it deepens, lightens and moves as you walk past.

The glass was cut, leaded and soldered in our studio in Sombor, Serbia.
