About 30 m² of stained glass ceilings for the new conference building at Volzhsky Utyos, the sanatorium of the Russian President's administration on the Volga, commissioned by the Russian Federation with Energoprojekt and installed in May 2007, days before the Russia EU summit.

A presidential sanatorium on the Volga

Volzhsky Utyos stands in a pine forest above the Kuybyshev Reservoir of the Volga, at the foot of the Zhiguli Mountains in the Samara Region, about 70 km from Syzran. Built in 1976, it belongs to the Administrative Department of the President of Russia, and Russian presidents have spent time here. In 2007 the complex was rebuilt to host the Russia EU summit of 17 and 18 May, where President Vladimir Putin received Chancellor Angela Merkel, Commission President José Manuel Barroso and the EU delegations, all of whom stayed in the complex.

Ceilings of light

For the new conference building, the Russian Federation commissioned Stanisic Studio, working with the Serbian company Energoprojekt, to create massive stained glass windows set into the ceilings, about 30 m² of glass in all. Circles and diamonds of blue, gold, red and green glass sit in plaster moldings above the marble corridors, lit from above so that they glow along the length of the halls.

From Sombor to the Volga in time for the summit

Every panel and frame was made in the studio in Sombor, Serbia, crated and shipped by truck on the long journey to the Volga. Stevan Stanisic and Dragan Bokun installed the ceilings by themselves in a record 3 days. The final acceptance was made by the Russian presidential architect of the time, who congratulated Stevan in the name of the Russian Federation and President Putin.
