Where architecture meets art
Sometimes the most compelling architectural details are the ones that quietly transform an everyday space into something extraordinary.
For a private residence in Reston, Virginia, Apperlo Art | Stanisic Studio created a contemporary stained glass installation for a set of tall sidelights, bringing together the timeless beauty of handblown glass, a refined geometric composition and the artistry of traditional leaded construction.
Designed to complement the warm wood architecture of the home, the glass introduces a delicate interplay of transparency, texture and color. The result is an architectural feature that feels both modern and timeless.
The beauty of handblown glass
At the heart of this installation is the remarkable character of Lamberts mouth blown glass, produced in Germany using traditional glassmaking techniques.
Unlike machine made glass, each sheet of Lamberts glass carries subtle variations in texture, thickness and transparency. These natural irregularities give the material its distinctive optical qualities, letting light move through the glass with a richness and depth that industrial glass cannot easily match.
In this composition, clear and lightly textured glass keeps a visual connection to the landscape beyond. Delicate ripples and variations in the glass gently transform the view, so the surrounding greenery becomes part of the artwork itself. The glass is never static: its appearance changes with the daylight, in a continuously evolving relationship between the interior and the garden outside.
A contemporary language of line and color
The design draws on modernist geometric abstraction, with an asymmetrical arrangement of rectangles, horizontal divisions and carefully placed accents.
Fine black lead lines set up a rhythmic composition across the 3 vertical panels. Their varying lengths and intersections balance structured geometry with artistic spontaneity. Small passages of cobalt blue, ruby red, amber and golden yellow punctuate an otherwise restrained palette of transparent and translucent glass.
These colorful details are intentionally modest in scale. They offer moments of discovery without overwhelming the architecture, so that line, proportion, texture and light become the primary artistic elements.
The art of leaded glass
Although contemporary in appearance, the installation relies on centuries old stained glass craftsmanship.
Each piece of glass is cut to shape and assembled within a network of lead cames. The dark lead lines serve both structure and art: they hold the glass and define the geometry, and they give the design its strong graphic character.
Precision matters most in abstract compositions like this one, where even a subtle difference in alignment, spacing or proportion can affect the harmony of the finished work. Here the traditional leaded glass technique becomes the foundation for a distinctly modern architectural expression.
A living composition
One of the most engaging qualities of the installation is how it works with its surroundings. The mix of clear, textured and translucent glass gives varying degrees of privacy while keeping a strong connection to the outdoors. Sunlight filters through each surface, revealing its texture and lighting up the colored accents, and the rich wood framing adds warmth against the crisp black lead lines.
And in a particularly charming moment, the family cat becomes an unexpected part of the composition, silhouetted against the glass while watching the garden beyond. It is a simple scene, yet it captures the essence of architectural art: artwork that becomes part of everyday life rather than something seen only from a distance.
Timeless materials, contemporary expression
This Reston commission reflects the Apperlo Art approach to architectural stained glass: traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, in artwork that belongs naturally in its surroundings.
The beauty lies not only in the overall composition but in the smallest details: the gentle movement within a sheet of handblown glass, the precise meeting of lead lines, and the sudden brilliance of a single colored piece lit by the sun. Together, these details turn a functional architectural opening into a lasting work of art.
